RecupBat and Febelauto give EV batteries a second life

Recyclingsecond life

RecupBat recyles EV baterries in the port of Antwerp. In 2024, they opened a Litium-Ion vault with their partner Febelauto.

Fabelauto collects, dismantles and processes high voltage batteries from electric vehicles (HEV-batteries). In the port of Antwerp, their partner RecupBat houses a 1.500m³ Lithium-Ion vault that allows for storage and processing of this type of batteries in a safe and efficient way.

The End-of-life Vehicle procedure that was developed by Febelauto allows all partners in the chain to follow the real-time status of the batteries.

“The number of collected HEV batteries will increase exponentially in the coming years. In 2023 alone, we saw a 10% increase in collected batteries, while sales of new electric vehicles increased by 137% compared to the previous year. Thanks to partners like RecupBat, we are already prepared for this growth and can respond safely and sustainably to the increasing demand for recycling.”        Catherine Lenaers, Febelauto’s CEO

Battery modules that are still in good condition are given a second life as stationary energystorage systems, for example for businesses. This allows for a significant elongation of the life of the battery.

Kanaal Z made a video report of the opening of the Lithium-Ion vault.
