Heat Network for Greenhouse horticulture

Artificial fertilizer producer Yara Sluiskil produces a lot of residual heat and CO2. WarmCO, a partnership between North Sea Port and Yara Sluiskil, is repurposing this residual heat and CO2 for the horticulture sector in Terneuzen. North Sea Port sells plots in a dedicated 220-hectare area, WarmCo sells the heat and CO2, transferring it to the greenhouses via pipelines.  the area is 125-hectare and there is still potential for growth.

By using this residual heat, horticulturists can save op to 90% on their energy consumption. This equals about 55 Mio m3 of natural gas – or the yearly consumption of 35.000 households. The residual CO2, is being used in the greenhouses as a fertilizer, growing tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.
