Cycling path made from recycled plastics

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has inaugurated a cycle path made from recycled plastic. This 800-meter-long path, located on the Right Bank in the port area, consists of two sections with innovative applications of reused and recycled plastics. The first section, developed by PlasticRoad BV, uses recycled plastic waste and fine stones, making it 72% less carbon-intensive than traditional asphalt Furthermore, it has a large buffer capacity, delaying water infiltration and improving water management. The second section, created by MacRebur, mixes asphalt with recycled plastic, replacing 6% of bitumen. The mix also improves the resistance to deformation and increases the stiffness of the asphalt, making it more suitable for heavy loads. This initiative is part of the port’s broader ambition to become climate-neutral by 2050, as well as accelerating the transition to a circular economy.
