Circular Water Use in Port of Antwerp

Reuse is a crucial strategy to achieve a circular economy. Although the maritime industry might not be the first that comes to mind for implementing second life, EDR Antwerp Shipyard has proven that it is feasible.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges stimulates and facilitates the reuse of water within the port of Antwerp. The aim is to close water loops and minimize water loss.

The port authority investigated how rainwater can be collected for reuse or local infiltration within their Antwerp grounds. The research conclusions are being implemented in the port’s sewerage and concession policy. The dry docks now run on purified wastewater, and data centers are cooled with collected rainwater.

Ekopak, a Belgian water recycling company, and Water-link, a Flemish drinking and waste water company, are joining forces with Aquafin and EPICo² for the Water-Kracht project. In 2026, they will install an innovative water factory that will convert wastewater from Antwerp residents, purified by Aquafin, into high-quality cooling water for companies in the port of Antwerp. At full capacity, the factory will be able to produce up to 3,000 m³/h of water, so that at least 20 billion liters of wastewater can be reused annually.

The CHERISH2O project (CHEmical industry water Reuse In a Sustainable Harbour) started in 2024 in the port of Antwerp. Twelve local chemical companies are joining forces with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, VITO, essenscia, VMM and Antea Group. The project is supported by the Flemish Blue Deal. The aim is to investigate the feasibility of purifying industrial wastewater on a large scale, inteded for reuse.  By producing process water from wastewater flows themselves, companies reduce their water consumption. Furthermore, in the event of drought, industry can limit the risks associated with water shortages and help safeguard the drinking water supply to citizens.
