BlueChem Incubator for Sustainable Chemistry

R&D Innovation

Bluechem is the first incubator for sustainable chemistry in Belgium. It wants to offer a location for start-ups and scale-ups to grow and innovate to create the chemistry of the future. The incubator offers a mix of fully equipped and freely customisable labs, private offices and flexible workspaces to accommodate start-ups, SMEs, large companies, research centres and knowledge institutions alike. Catalisti, the spearhead cluster for chemistry and plastics, is also taking an active role in BlueChem to detect, launch and supervise promising innovation projects.

BlueChem opened its doors in May 2020 at the eco-effective Blue Gate Antwerp business park, in the heart of one of the largest chemical clusters in the world and close to the port of Antwerp. The location offers opportunities for synergies between established companies and innovators. BlueChem is closely connected to  BlueApp (University of Antwerp) and NextGenDemo (Port of Antwerp Bruges), creating an ecosystem for innovation in sustainable chemistry.

The incubator was founded and  by a  unique public-private partnership that brings industry (essencia, Catalisti), academics (VITO) and government (Provincial Development Agency Antwerp and City of Antwerp) together. The project is funded by the ERDF (EU), Hermes fund (Flemish government) and the City of Antwerp.
