Antwerp Coordination Centre – circular construction

circular construction

In December 2024, Port of Antwerp-Bruges began construction of the new Antwerp Coordination Center (ACC) at the Zandvliet-Berendrecht Lock. This state-of-the-art facility, set to be operational by the end of 2026, aims to enhance efficiency and sustainability in port operations. The ACC will serve as a central hub for various nautical chain partners, including shipping guidance, lock operators, and pilotage. Additionally, the ACC will include training facilities, relaxation areas, and the visitor center ‘Havenwereld’ (Port world).

The design combines innovation and sustainability. The flexible and modular structure allows to respond to future changes, a key feature of circular construction. Plenty of attention has been paid to circular and considered use of materials, ensuring that resources are used more sustainably and can be recycled The 8.000m² floorspace building will be energy-neutral, utilizing ground energy and solar panels, and will feature green roofs and rainwater recycling systems. By stacking the 8 volumes, the actual building will only take up 1.000m². It is set in a 10.000m² domain, allowing for a green, eco-friendly meeting space surrounding the infrastructure.

The construction was commissioned by POAB, MDK, Atelier Stadsbouwmeester and Tractebel as a Design, Build and Maintain assignment to the consortium Groep Van Roey, Van Roey Services, KAAN Architecten / SVR-ARCHITECTS, Sweco and BLASCO.
