Sustainability Report 2019 – Port of Antwerp

Year 2019 (September)
Author(s) Port of Antwerp - Port Authority

This report is the fifth sustainability report of the Antwerp port community. With this report, the port community reports on its joint efforts and results in the field of sustainable development.

Circular economy in the port

The port offers many opportunities to implement a circular economy.
The extensive chemical cluster, waste processing companies, logistics facilities and ample storage capacity create opportunities to share transport and land and to (re)use by-products and waste from one company to another. An additional perspective is the development of recycling hubs, the missing link in high-quality closed loops. These hubs organise the return logistics of end-of-life products and recycle sorted and pre-treated waste streams into new materials. Around the hubs, value chains can be established that convert valuable streams into usable raw materials. CO2 is also a waste that can be used as a building block for new materials or products. To become a leader in the low carbon economy, innovative CO2 projects are being set up.

Roadmap circular economy

Together with the Flemish Public Waste Management Agency (OVAM), the port community has drawn up a circular economy roadmap, which outlines the possibilities for developing the port into a circular hotspot. It shows how the port area can develop into a recycling hub for plastics and metals. Based on the roadmap, the circular economy will be further implemented in the port.
