Reuse is a crucial strategy to achieve a circular economy. Although the maritime industry might not be the first that comes to mind for implementing second life, EDR Antwerp Shipyard has proven that it is feasible.
EDR Antwerp Shipyard managed and executed a second life project of a geared container vessel in dock 5 (265 m by 39 m). “In the soaring container market, each second is of importance and pressure on the project timing is never far away”. During her docking the vessel underwent full hull blasting, pipe- and BWTS modifications, hatch cover treatment and repairs, cargo hold upgrade, engine overhaul and shaft and propeller replacement. The versatile vessel is now ready for her second life and will be a reliable addition to the container fleet.
