The World Ports Climate Initiative (WPCI) was launched by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) in 2008. At that time, 55 ports signed a declaration to take action against climate change and work towards sustainable practices in the maritime industry 1.
Since then, the initiative has evolved, and in the summer of 2019, the Action Plans of the Working Groups were approved, leading to the establishment of the World Ports Climate Action Program (WPCAP). This program aims to foster collaboration among ports, share knowledge, develop joint projects, and involve the shipping sector in achieving concrete progress toward sustainability goals 2. Additionally, the World Ports Sustainability Program continues to demonstrate global leadership by empowering port communities worldwide to engage with stakeholders and create sustainable value for local communities and regions 3.
