Towards Circular Recreational Boating in Belgium

The Belgian Federal Public Service for Mobility and Transport is promoting a circular approach to recreational boating to reduce environmental impact and improve safety. Many boats in Belgium are reaching the end of their lifespan, and without proper disposal, they can become pollutants or hazards.

Key Goals

  • Extend the lifespan of pleasure boats.
  • Encourage reuse and recycling at the end of a boat’s life.
  • Promote eco-friendly design, using natural or biodegradable materials.

Actions Taken

  • A preliminary study in 2022 explored how circular economy principles could apply to the boating sector.
  • A survey in 2023 gathered opinions from boaters about end-of-life boats and abandonment issues.
  • In March 2024, experts met during Belgium’s EU Council Presidency to discuss circular strategies across Europe.
  • A legal study is underway to assess current laws and propose changes to better manage abandoned or obsolete boats.

Next Steps

  • Develop a roadmap for 2030 with stakeholders.
  • Continue engaging boaters, who have shown strong interest in contributing to solutions.
