Towards a sustainable competitive advantage by focusing on the biobased and circular economy

In this study, the port of Amsterdam has been examined in more detail, opportunities for the development of both a biobased and circular economy have been mapped out and 17 actions have been identified for the Port of Amsterdam to be able to capitalize on these opportunities.

The study concludes that there are great opportunities for the port of Amsterdam to continue the transition to sustainable applications in the biobased and circular economy, especially for biodiesel and gas and building blocks for biochemistry. These opportunities are also apparent from the port’s strong hub function: a number of powerful logistics players are already present that are actively involved in the treatment of biodiesel, but the existing agro flows in particular have potential for application in biobased routes. A number of logistics players are also active in the port in scrap and other forms of recycling — the scrap trade shows that the circular economy is increasingly developing on an international scale, in which the deployment of seaports is indispensable.
